Here are some of the tiny EVs making a splash in Asia and Europe. AdvertisementChief among those is the Seagull, a tiny EV that can go 305 km on a single charge and costs $11,000. SOPA Images/Getty ImagesJapan has long had a soft spot for tiny EVs, known as Kei cars — and the Nissan Sakura is one of the most popular. BITechnically speaking, the Citroen Ami isn't an electric car at all, but an "electric quadricycle." The tiny microcar has been on sale in Europe since 2021, with a UK launch mooted for later this year.

Last September, I drove to a protected wetland near my home in Oakland, Calif., walked to the end of a pier and started looking at birds. On that pier, for the first time, I had gone somewhere solely to watch birds. In some birding circles, people say that anyone who looks at birds is a birder — a kind, inclusive sentiment that also overlooks the forces that create and shape subcultures. I keep abreast of eBird’s rare bird alerts and have spent many days — some glorious, others frustrating — looking for said rare birds. I went out with experienced birders to learn how they move through a landscape and what cues they attend to.

Theme parks are the latest industry to implement a form of surge pricing. Merlin Entertainments, which owns Legoland and Madame Tussauds, plans to start "dynamic pricing" at its top attractions. Wendy's drew backlash and quickly walked back its announcement about exploring dynamic pricing. Visitors to certain Legoland locations will soon start experiencing surge pricing — or "dynamic pricing," as the CEO of the company that owns the parks calls it — based on fluctuating demand. But streaming music is a really, really hard business to make money in. That's why Spotify has spent so much time and money trying to do things beyond streaming music. These are some of the ventures Spotify has bet on to expand beyond its core business — selling streaming music subscriptions. But the main takeaway you ought to get from reading about Spotify's attempt to do something beyond selling music subscriptions is this one: Spotify really, really wants to do stuff beyond selling music subscriptions. BLIGHT: Fungi and the Coming Pandemic, by Emily MonossonThere’s a scene in Don DeLillo’s novel “White Noise” in which the protagonist reminisces with an ex-wife who was “ultrasensitive to many things,” as she puts it. “Sunlight, air, food, water, sex,” he says. Monosson’s book takes up the other side. Fungal infections of the skin tend not to be life-threatening; it’s when they invade the blood that they can be lethal. Being warmblooded has provided humans and other mammals with a degree of protection: Most fungi prefer lower temperatures; we run too hot.

And their strength isn’t limited to the psychedelic: Functional mushrooms — species that have been shown to have cognitive, immune system and longevity benefits — have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine to treat a variety of ailments. The pairing of cacao and mushrooms can be traced back thousands of years: Ceremonies in which fungi were mixed with cacao in an attempt to commune with the divine were an integral part of many Mesoamerican cultures. “The relationship between cacao and mushrooms is symbiotic,” says Zar. “The cacao is a vasodilator,” an agent that widens blood vessels, she continues, “and acts as a carrier for the mushrooms” across the blood-brain barrier, allowing the fungi to take effect. “As an interconnected, living network,” he says, “fungi are poster organisms for ecological and circular thinking.”

If there’s a safe way to take a walk in the rain, wind or fog, “lean into the elements,” said Rob Walker, the author of “The Art of Noticing,” a book about finding opportunities to be amazed in everyday life. Revel in the dramatically shifting landscapes — the drama of wind whipping through the trees, or the way that rain can make greenery look more vivid. “I don’t want to encourage anyone to go kick a football around in a hurricane,” Walker said.

The banging on Tuesday first came every 30 minutes and was heard again four hours later, according to an internal government memo update on the search. The search for the missing submersible Titan has broadened to an area about two times the size of Connecticut. It was unclear when exactly the banging was heard Tuesday or how long it lasted, based on the memo. We have to keep working until we find the submersible,” Joyce Murray, minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, told reporters Wednesday. If the submersible is intact, the passengers would be dealing with dwindling oxygen levels and fighting cold, he told CNN.

Scientists conducted their expedition in the Mediterranean last year aboard the Alfred Merlin research vessel. The team used the research vessel’s underwater mapping and imaging equipment to catalog shipwrecks, dating from ancient times to the 20th century, with sonar.
